Description of Umuganda

Umuganda” community works can be translated as “coming together in common purpose to achieve an outcome”. It is one of the precious tools of mutual help in the Rwandan culture.  “Umuganda day” called “Umunsi w’Umuganda”, is designed as a day where citizens contribute to the building of their country. The concept of Umuganda originates from Kinyarwanda word meaning woods used to construct traditional house.

In the post-genocide period, Umuganda was reintroduced as one of the Rwanda’s Home grown solutions; as means of the social and economic reconstruction of the country.
